Aim of Department of Biomolecular Science and Reaction is to understand various biological phenomena through revealing structures of biomolecules and interaction/reactions among them and to contribute to Bio-Industry by using technologies based on the mechanism of action. We are involved in the following projects. 1) An artificial olfactory sensor is successfully developed using about 400 of human olfactory receptors. We will specify a group of the olfactory receptors activated by a specific odor and construct database indicating the relations between odor-activated receptor group. Thereby, we aim to realize an odor information DX that "records, saves, transmits, and reconstructs" all odors in the near future. 2) As basic technology to elucidate atomic structures of the biomolecules, we participate in elucidating real structures of proteins through neutron crystallography of protein crystal and structural analysis with diffraction by X-ray free electron laser in addition to normal X-ray crystallography. 3) Furthermore, we develop novel antibiotics having antibacterial and anti-pathogenic effects against multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacteria.
