Following the signing of an academic exchange agreement with the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics (SIOM) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in July 2024, Professor Hosokai, Associate Professor Jin and other members of the Hosokai Lab visited SIOM and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Physics and Astronomy(SJTU).
The visit was organised with the aim of further developing joint research between the two institutions in the field of optics and power laser application technology, and a wide range of research presentations and exchanges of opinions took place, from basic research to social implementation of research results.

Project Manager Sano (SANKEN Specially Appointed professor and expert at the Institute for Molecular Science) and Assistant PM Sumiya of the ‘Development and demonstration of a laser-driven quantum beam accelerator’ project of the JST Science and Technology Agency for the creation of a future society also participated, and held research seminars and workshops with researchers and students at the SIOM and SJTU respectively.
These sessions were attended by many students from SIOM and SJTU, who actively asked questions and engaged in lively discussions. In particular, presentations were made in cutting-edge fields such as high-power laser-driven quantum beam acceleration technology, high-tolerance optical elements, ultra-high-strength field science using power lasers and biomedical applications of optical quantum beams, providing a great opportunity for close collaboration between researchers from SANKEN and the SIOM and SJTU sides.

During the visit, the delegation also visited a number of state-of-the-art power laser research facilities at SIOM and SJTU, where they observed laser-driven high-energy particle acceleration experiments based on ultra-intense ultrashort pulse laser technology, ultra-intense field science experiments and ultra-high tolerance optical element production, and exchanged opinions directly with the researchers on site. They exchanged opinions directly with researchers on site and deepened their understanding of the latest research developments.
Furthermore, as the year 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of SIOM, Professor Chen Weibiao as a Director of SIOM, presented commemorative plaques to Professor Hosokai and PM Sano (specially appointed professor) on this special occasion.
