Lunar City Development Research Center

In May 2025, The University of Osaka established the Lunar City Development Research Center within SANKEN as part of its efforts to address the challenges facing Japan’s space industry and to regain international competitiveness. Leveraging SANKEN’s expertise in carbon neutrality and circular economy technologies, the center aims to serve as a central hub connecting various departments across the university. It is dedicated to contributing to the development of sustainable living systems that maximize the reuse of limited resources in space and on the Moon.

Our focuses

Our center focuses on the following four key areas:

  • Research and Development of Sustainable Space Life Technologies

  • Strengthening Industry-Academia-Government Collaboration and Promoting Social Implementation
Disseminating research outcomes to the public and strengthening collaboration with companies and local governments to accelerate technology demonstration and commercialization.

  • Advancing International Collaborative Research
Partnering with overseas universities and research institutions to incorporate Japanese technologies into international lunar development projects.
